Writing Song Lyrics Made Easier With Your
Computer And Songwriting Software
By Robert Curtis
Writing song lyrics, whether pop, country, hip hop, rock, rap, r&b, Christian, metal, punk, alternative, jazz, children's or (take a breath) even for a musical, often begins by scratching out a few words on a napkin or an ATM receipt during an inspired moment.
If you're lucky you might even have a cassette player or a digital mp3 recorder handy to actually record some lyric lines and even a melodic idea.
Songs can also come to you in times that you've set aside specifically to write, gee how convenient ;-)
However and whenever your song inspiration arrives the song lyric will eventually need to be written out to its completion and often may very well involve a lot of
perspiration to fully flesh out your inspiration.
As you begin to develop your song lyric the use of a computer and specific programs designed for aiding in the writing of songs can give you a tremendous boost... not only in writing out a legible lyric but also in offering a cool set of handy and even inspirational tools readily at your fingertips to stimulate your creativity.
Get The Benefits Of Computer
Power Tools For Songwriting
Common songwriting tools are now routinely available in computerized form like rhyming dictionaries to provide you with rhyme choices you may not have ever thought of ... or if you're stuck on a word or want a different word or phrase to capture your idea thesauruses can give you some interesting alternatives to get your concept across.
If you're reading this online you can check a great free, online rhyming dictionary at: rhymezone.com and a great online thesaurus and dictionary at dictionary.com.
By having an expanded view of choices it can help you write more interesting and more conversational lines which you may find to be even better lines than your original idea.
As you may have noticed having a computer and even an internet connection just gave you ready access to potent songwriting tools in an easy format and may have already just helped you find a certain rhyme you've been looking for.
Songwriting Software Powers and Simplifies Your Efforts
Software programs now available provide these resources and more to simplify and power your songwriting process and being software that's loaded into your own computer it is readily handy when you're off-line or online.
Today good programs with a built in thesaurus, rhyming dictionary and, since we're talking about words, even a spell checker can readily be purchased and immediately and easily put to use to instantly ignite your creative process.
And those items just mentioned are just the songwriting power tools basics. Better programs have those and more.
Noted below is an image from the program Lyricist which encompasses all of these features and benefits which to start with allows you to quickly find interesting rhymes and alternative words on the fly as you're writing your song. (Click on the image to see a larger view).
With a program like Lyricist to get that perfect word or rhyme... just highlight a word you're considering changing, click the Thesaurus or Rhyme button and presto a list of choices pops up next to your lyric and it has over 11,000 of the most commonly used rhymes including slang.
Check out Lyricist's full features and benefits list by clicking here.
Lyricist has organized the most commonly used tools plus more into one centralized system for writing songs. Creativity boosters are just a simple and intuitive click away. (Article continues below after video frame)
Tom Boyles of the PARIS Directory states "...software that once might have been described simply as "handy" is becoming more essential. If you're a songwriter, you want Lyricist". Click here to read Tom's entire review.
I use the program regularly. It's my essential songwriting tool.
Another program, even more elaborate on the lyric side of writing is MasterWriter. It works as a stand alone program but can also serve as a sort of power booster to Lyricist as well. Click here to read more about the features and benefits of MasterWriter.
Do You Collaborate On Songs?
If you collaborate on songs email is becoming a more and more common method for doing so and by using a program like Lyricist you simply can email your song file right out of the program.
In fact with Lyricist you can even attach any musical audio files you may have as well (up to five currently but that should be more than enough). Your lyrics and music files are all easily attached into one neat package easily sendable right out of Lyricist.
If you're doing a cyberwriting session using a live chat system then your rhyming dictionary, thesaurus and spell checker are right there at the click of a mouse. Talk about time saving. Your collaborator will appreciate your quicker responses in the chat window as well.
Special note. Please read my primer on working out a written collaboration agreement before you even start to co-write a song. Please click here for more on this and get a FREE copy of the collaboration agreement I use to adapt to your own usage.
Got Lap Top?
If you're using a laptop then you're really road trip ready with your songwriting software loaded. Having a lap top is particularly nice when you feel the urge to write at the corner window table at the local coffee hang out or even 30,000 feet up on Southwest Airlines, on your way to Nashville of course.
Speaking of traveling, like to meet with a collaborator, having Lyricist along on your lap top makes co-writing meetings more productive. You can instantly come up with a bunch of rhymes and word substitutes before your writing partners can even find the letter of the alphabet in their hard bound.
But, they might be as smart as you and have already bought Lyricist for themselves :-)
