Editor's Note:

Hello again, I hope you're well and enjoying the development of your songwriting pursuits and benefiting from at least some of the songwriting software, tools and programs we discuss in each issue.

This month I have the pleasure of introducing a remarkable, literally breakthrough program in general, but especially for songwriters who often write far more songs than they can ever afford to demo.

With the new program Vocaloid we'll be discussing today you'll likely appreciate we're on the dawn of a new era in producing songs from the lyric and musical ideas all the way to the full production of a song including the vocals completely on and from a computer.

When I first heard the vocal renditions of this software I was impressed and I think it's only going to get better and cheaper as time goes on. Eventually there might be a way to sample and reproduce your own voice as well that could save a lot of work on your voice.

I hope you see why I'm so excited as you check out this story and listen to some of the samples with your own ears.

Item 1

Virtual Vocalist Leon from the Vocaloid Series of Software.Vocaloid Software - A Virtual Singing Sensation!

Now you can have a top notch stable of virtual singers on call anytime you need them and more voices are coming. Yes, it's software developed and refined to emulate a human voice, emotion and all!

This is truly breakthrough technology.

Introducing Vocaloid

Yamaha pioneered the programming to bring this capability to market and at this juncture through a company Zero G products three voices have been created, all of which have been worked up from actual singers' voices.

And the price per voice is about the cost of a good demo singer for a couple of songs, at least in Los Angeles and New York.

The big upside here is that once you buy a Vocaloid voice software program you can use it over and over again and you just pay the initial purchase price for the software.

It simply follows the words and notes you put into the program and then creates the singing part for your song. You can edit the voice just like you would a live recording of a vocalist with reverb, etc..

Currently Three Singers To Choose From

Leon and Lola were the first two singing voices rolled out, virtual male and female soul vocalists modeled on two professional singers and for now they sing in English only. The newest and third vocalist in the line up is the modeled voice of Miriam Stockley the esteemed singer from the U.K..

Miriam has worked with: Tina Turner, Elton John, George Michael, Freddie Mercury, Chaka Khan, David Bowie, Seal, Adiemus, and numerous others. Miriam's voice is considered technically excellent but she's also know for the emotion she conveys and has had chart success hitting #2 in the UK with the song "Only You" with the group Praise and has more recently debuted her own solo albums on Virgin.

The Nuts And Bolts Of How It Works

You type in your melodic notes and related lyrics and then the software creates a synthesized vocal that sounds like a human voice.

Next, you can edit the vocal with various effects like crescendo, diminuendo, pitch bend and so forth.

If you're primarily a chord player like me then with other software you could sing your melody, convert it to notation (the melodic notes on a stave), and then enter those notes into Vocaloid.

Suitable For Many Musical Styles

Vocaloid is suitable for many styles of music, pop to country to hip hop, rock, opera and on and on, you name it, even dance music styles. Vocaloid offers various templates to alter the vocal expression to suit the style in ways that are natural in human vocal performance.

Hear Them Sing For Yourself
