Now Appearing... The Foundations...
As in the better foundation you lay - the stronger the
house above will be.
Like a canvas provides a foundation on which to build
a painting - songs too are hung upon a basic framework - and the better
you understand and apply the construction of your song to a basic song
foundation the stronger your song will be.
Your song may still be ugly and sound terrible but it
will no less be strong in its elements providing the best chance for
a great song to shine.
So to the point - let's look at various ways you can learn,
relearn or even burnish your grasp of the basics of songwriting.
A Peek In The Library At The Old Basics
- Books
There are many titles available and in
this economic time of challenge you may well find many of them for free
- at your local library.
For starters check out Pete and Pat Luboff's
new 101
Songwriting Wrongs And How To Write Them formerly their best-selling
88 Songwriter Wrongs And How To Write Them. It's been updated and includes
added information on new developments in music business and technology.
And also check out another newly updated
and highly regarded text - John Braheny's The
Craft And Business Of Songwriting.
And to get very detailed treatments on
lyric writing consider the works of esteemed masters in this area -
Sheila
Davis and Pat
Pattison.
For a deeper look at the musical side of
hit songwriting check out Jai Josefs and his book Writing
Music For Hit Songs. Jai's text is the definitive text on the musical
side of pop songwriting and is used as a principal text in many music
schools for pop songwriting.
If you play guitar - also consider How
to Write Songs on Guitar (1st edition), by Rikky Rooksby.
And newly released for keyboard players
is Rikky Rooksby's How
To Write Songs on Keyboard.

Songwriting Schools and Courses
Probably the most recognized and prestigious
music school that offers a songwriting track would be Boston's Berklee
College of Music where you can attend directly or online with the
same esteemed faculty.
SongU.com,
run by some successful Nashville songwriters, is an example of one of
the newer online music schools that have developed in large part because
of the internet.
Other listings, including international, can be found
on the links page of CraftOfSongwriting.com.
Also consider your own local adult schools
and colleges for courses - as often at least in metropolitan areas there
are songwriters who put on courses in various aspects of writing and
promoting songs. Typically for colleges these would be extension courses
that are not necessarily for college credit.
You can find even more with online searches
of "songwriting courses" and "songwriting critique services".
And Or Go Beyond The Academic
If you're looking for something more in the creative
realm of learning you may find The
Songwriting Genius Within You to be more your cup of tea.
This program recognizes that within all of us is a unique
voice of expression and connection with the world that if uninhibited
can shine through in beautiful moving songs.
It also recognizes that there is an ongoing need to
develop craft as well - like in learning about song structuring and
honing your ability with your instrument.
But in the big picture the program puts forth ideas
that allow the harnessing of your creativity with certain techniques
and other thought processes derived from many masters over hundreds
of years.
Lessons are drawn from from recent to even long ago musical geniuses
like Mozart to even those outside
of the music world to bring in the creative processing gems of great
thinkers like Einstein and Socrates.
In this program the author takes you
through concrete exercises that are designed to unleash the non judgmental,
non analytical creative part of your brain - and soul if you will
- to write your most moving and inspiring music..
