Last year we took a look at three major contemporary music programs at three different contemporary music schools across the United States and their general curriculums but unless you lived near one or could locate there you were a bit out of luck. Not to mention the cost; moving there, tuition, books, housing, meals, etc.. But with the internet and more and more courses moving online your own desktop becomes your classroom - no matter where you are in the world - saving you a lot of the added expenses noted above. Of the those three top contemporary music schools we noted one very clearly leads the way in online offerings to the tune of 130 online courses including a collection just for songwriters. Berklee in Boston - And Here, There And Everywhere Berklee College of Music in Boston has continued to blow the doors open in the realm of top notch music course offerings online and makes getting first class music education in contemporary music available to any point on the globe. It's got practically it's entire curriculum online with categories encompassing everything from music production to performance to arranging to our main focus, songwriting. Click here to their overview page on all their online courses. Let's take a closer look at the songwriting category.. Get Real World Skills Virtually Berklee College of Music's program major in songwriting takes you through course-work in melody, harmony, and musical arrangement on through to creative musical composition, lyric writing. And how to do all of this with your own personal style being included. Courses prepare you for writing in different types of genres and markets like writing for film and tv, including scoring films, and writing straight ahead great pop songs along with hip-hop. There's even a course for jazz composition - a hallmark in the school's history. There are even courses on music notation using the two primary mainstream notators, Finale and Sibelius. Take A Single Course Or A Group Of Your Choosing You may only want or need help in one particular area or just don't have the time or money to do a bigger simultaneous program and that option is there to go one course at a time. You could even put together your own collection of course to be taken at once or successively if you choose. Cost is a consideration too with courses running about $1,100 US for noncredit and $1,300 for credit earning courses. Earn Specialized Certification Awards If you want to focus on and or get a recognized certification in a particular area there are a few choices rounded out for particular emphasis.
