Editor's Note:

This month's issue focuses on music recording programs and we'll spotlight a couple of new programs from Cakewalk.

Each of these programs deliver pretty high end recording capabilities for very modest pricing - especially when you put them up against the competition.

When I say new I need to qualify that both programs have been around for a while but are just recently in new version releases and have added a lot of new meat to their bones.

They're both good bets depending on your needs - particularly depending on if you're more loop based or live instrument based.

I've been using the loop based program (Project 5 Version 2) and can attest that it's quite a capable and impressive program for a very reasonable price.

New Cakewalk Cakewalks

No, the title of this article is not a misprint - it simply implies Cakewalk has released two new programs recently for home recording on PCs that are also being well received and are easier to use.

In particular I'm referring to the newest edition of Project 5 Version 2 and the new Sonar program, Sonar 6, that just came out.

What's The Difference?

First - Project 5 v2 Up Close And Simple

To keep it simple Project 5 v2 works well when you want to produce various sounds from drums to strings using loops (prerecorded samples) especially if you don't play any instruments per say.

It should be noted though that with the newest version of Project 5 v2 you can now record audio too. So you could construct an entire song's instrumentation using Project 5's loops and then record your vocals and mix.

Project 5 v2 now even comes with high end samples from Cakewalk's Dimension Pro program - you don't get everything from Dimension Pro but you do get a good helping of stellar samples that sound totally live for actual acoustic instruments and very real for the electronic instruments and sound effects.

Also note that if you want to use both programs you can for example taking a loop from Project 5 and running it into Sonar 6 or vice versa.

Second - Sonar 6 Up Close And Simple Too

The Sonar 6 programs are primarily aimed at recording live audio that being live instruments and vocals.

It also has the ability to record virtual instruments as well for example running in recorded loops from Project 5 or the more elaborate Dimension Pro program that cakewalk recently released as well.

Sonar 6 comes in various strengths i.e. the Studio edition or the Producer edition that costs the most. Most songwriters will get more than they need form the Studio edition however.
