Finally - Keyboard Midi
Controllers With Sound
For the longest time keyboard midi controllers - keyboards that control
software on your computer - have done just pretty much that. Although
they looked like piano keyboards in their layout they were essentially
nonfunctional short of being hooked up to your computer and simply made
sounds via software you'd loaded into your computer.
Now a couple of companies have made a logical leap to empowering these
keyboards further with actual built-in sound capabilities so you can
play these keyboards as stand alone instruments as well - at least as
electric pianos more or less.
This creates a lot of advantages for the songwriter and recording artist
among which are, depending on the model, the immediate capability to
play your keyboard without your computer or the ability to take along
your keyboard and play it where ever you want - at least on headphones.
CME Steps Up With Its U-Key
CME has rolled out its first version of a midi keyboard
controller with built-in sound in its U-Key
49-Key Mobiletone model.
Their very slim and sleek design offers a compact unit
with 49 full size, touch sensitive keys for similarity to standard keyboard,
digital piano or piano playing.
Along those lines it has a jack for hooking up a sustain
pedal as well for true piano-like performance.
The major drawback to this model is that it is not power
independent as in it needs a computer, via a usb connection, to power
it - no standard powering like with a DC adapter.
M-Audio Steps Up And Goes Beyond
M-Audio, the number one midi keyboard controller company,
has just rolled out their version of a controller with built-in sound
too.
It is part of their new KeyStudio
49i model and not only does it have a built-in piano sound but it
is high quality - taken from an actual stereo sampled Steinway grand
piano.
The KeyStudio 49i stands apart from the CME U-Key here
in that it can serve as a stand alone instrument for the piano playing,
via DC power, so you don't have to power up your computer to play it.
To access its other 128 instrument sounds you do have
to boot up your system - compatible with Windows or Macs as is the U-Key
This model also has an audio interface in it as well saving
you from the need of purchasing an external audio interface or perhaps
offering you the opportunity to upgrade your interface and getting a
new controller with it.
See the Songwriting
Software Plus page on audio interfaces to appreciate this further
if need be.
So if you're in the market for a new controller, keyboard
and or audio interface I suggest putting the U-Key and KeyStudio 49i
on your list to check out.
