A
Computer Solely For Your Music Soul
If you can afford it having a computer just for your music
in your home studio can provide a number of benefits.
Perhaps you're already set up as such so you may not need
to read this article though you may pick up some pointers to better
your situation.
Desktop Or Laptop? Depends
You'll get more power and digital storage for your money
with a desktop computer system but if on occasion you may want to take
your "music" computer with you then having a laptop makes
it a cinch.
Also it's good to consider screen size and weather or
not you may want a second monitor. If you got a Mac you can readily
add a second monitor, even with the Mac Mini, and move programs back
and forth between the two and with PCs running Windows XP, Vista and
7 this option is quite workable too.
And consider how you'll interact with the computer too
as far as keyboarding and mousing. If you get a laptop you may not be
comfortable using the keyboard and touch pad or pointer on the laptop
so you'd have to get either a cable hooked keyboard or a wireless one
and mouse.
Audio Interface
An equally important decision is the incorporation of
an audio interface. You can get one that's suitable for music recording
built in to a desktop and even a laptop though with the laptop that
would really jack the price up.
Thus, having an external audio interface allows the easy
ability to change the unit if your not happy with it or your needs change
or your simply want to move it because it's easier to hook a microphone
up to it from one side of your studio set up versus just where your
computer is located.
Also, when you have a computer dedicated to your music,
once you've configured your audio interface with your computer it's
all set.
Read more about audio interfaces and their importance
to your recording at our audio interface page here
because generally speaking the audio interfaces that come with off the
shelf computers don't cut it for songwriting/recording projects.
Internet Connection Issues
It's generally recommended to not have your home studio
computer online. Of course there will be times when you want to connect
to the internet from your home studio such as when you want to send
an mp3 of your song but otherwise there are advantages to disconnecting
when you're simply working on your music.
For one you'll minimize your exposure to possible virus
penetrations of your system if you're not connected to the internet.
Secondly, you'll cut down on potential interruptions such
as instant messages, skype calls and the like unless of course you're
waiting on an important contact but otherwise you're there to work on
your music, right?
And, along the same lines, you'll hopefully be less distracted
by the temptation of surfing the net while you're otherwise trying to
spend dedicated time on your music :-)
