Ogg Makes More Room For Your Songs
Who is Ogg?
Who is Ogg? Or more aptly, what is ogg?
Ogg is a newer file format, shown as .ogg, that has been gaining in
popularity as it allows for high quality recording characteristics to
shine through similar to what you find on typical .wav files but at
about a tenth of the space.
Accordingly by saving your files into a .ogg format you save lots of
valuable hard drive space for recording and saving more of your songs.
And not only do you save space on your hard drive - when you burn a
cd of your songs with .ogg format you save space on the cds and thus
can get more songs on a CD of course.
A Little Background On Ogg
The .ogg file format for audio came from a nonprofit programming
group with an initial fully working release of this format in 2002.
Over time this format has become more known and popular.
There are other .ogg formats that involve video and other
types of digital file compression but we're talking about the audio
version in this article.
Also, if your recording program or one you're considering
notes that it allows mix downs to .ogg files they're talking about the
audio version - though some music recording programs have video capabilities
as well and typically would include the .ogg file type for video compression
too.
Maybe Now You Don't Need A New Hard Drive Or New
Computer Just Yet
With the space savings that the .ogg files offer you'll
be able to store a lot more of your recordings and song demos.
Theoretically you could free up 90% of your hard drive
space currently housing a bunch of your .wav file mixes.
With more efficient storage of your recordings it allows
putting off the time that you'll need to consider adding more storage
to your current hard drive or buying a new computer even.
What Music Recording Programs Are Using .ogg files?
Many music recording programs have capabilities now to
work with .ogg files such as importing a mix to be worked on.
Check your program specifications as it may be included
or if you're looking to invest in a music recording program see what
they say about if and how they deal with .ogg files.
Here at Songwriting Software Plus our featured high
value, low cost recording program Mixcraft is on the leading edge of
this issue as they now offer the ability to mix to .ogg files in their
new version 5.
As such, Mixcraft notes the following on their website:
"Option to record directly to high-quality compressed OGG files
in Mixcraft 5. OGG files can take up 1/10th of the hard drive space
of uncompressed WAV recordings. This is ideal for collaborators exchanging
projects over the internet...". Click
here for more information on Mixcraft 5.
You can now consider yourself fully Ogged and perhaps
90% lighter.
