As competition has gotten stiffer and the economies of much of the world softer - computer makers that traditionally have only sold online or at their own retail shops are going into other land based stores.
You can now find Apple computers at the retail electronic chain Best Buy and Dell computers in stores like Staples and even Best Buy too.
While music retailers have sold computers systems for a long time Dell's new venture with Guitar Center marks a new beginning for a major computer maker to not only sell its line out side its normal channels but to have it preconfigured to suit a music making audience.
Today we'll take a look at a couple of music configured models from Dell now selling at Guitar Center as we focus on computer hardware this issue.

Dell Plays Guitar?
The music retail giant Guitar Center has recently struck a deal to offer some pre-configured Dell systems, a desktop and a laptop, starting through its online store MusiciansFreind.com. So yes - a Dell can now play guitar - at least a software guitar.
So if you are PC based and in the market for a highly rated computer, for both performance and customer service, and now supported by Guitar Center, you may be impressed with either one of the following systems.
Would A Powerful Dual Core Processor Desktop Do The Job?
The first system out of the gate in the desktop category is the Dell Inspiron 531 MT Desktop.
This thing is powerful yet energy efficient.
It packs an AMD Athtlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5000+ processor and 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM but with its Energy Star 4 compliance it uses a lot less energy than previous similarly loaded models - so it helps save the planet too.
The advantage of incorporating the new dual-core processor is that it allows you to run two or more programs at once with much higher performance for each program than you previously got with the last generation of single core processors.
So with dual-core processors you could easily be creating your music in Cubase with Real Drums and Virtual Guitarist cranked up and crafting your lyrics with Lyricist and Master Writer all going full blast at the same time.
With the included 19" flat panel monitor you can immediately and literally see how this would actually be working on this nice sizable screen - all packaged at $999 US.
Need To Be More Mobile?
In the on-the-run department the Dell Inspiron Laptop 1521 is the offering.
This lean unit also sports a dual-core processor and contains 2 GBs of ram and a 320 GB hard drive - good processing power and good storage space for home studio based songwriters.
Again you get the advantage of easily being able to run multiple programs much more easily and quickly.
Granted it is not as powerful as the desktop but if you need to take your computer on the road this can be a great choice.

Both computers are run with the new Windows Vista operating system - thus as always check with your software's manufacturer about whether their programs do or will shortly run on Vista.
