But we all need the rain none the less as it's one way to fuel our growth - right? - and along those lines our home site has gotten washed up anew and has a brand new, easier to read look - that you can check out by clicking here. And speaking of renewal or even starting a new - this issue starts off with a focus on learning or and or ever learning the foundational and advanced aspects of songwriting. Accordingly we'll look at three major contemporary music programs at three different schools across the United States today. And just as an aside - if you're ever wondering just how important your music might be to others - I thought you might enjoy seeing an article I recently read by one of my favorite attitude and sales gurus Jeffrey Gitomer. In the article Jeffrey talks about a bunch of varied concerts he and his partner Jessica attended over the past year - from Kanye West to Leonard Cohen - and just how important music in general is to all of our lives; the memories it evokes and the power it gives us to move ahead. The world needs us! By the way, I'm sidetracked a bit again from my album project, happily so though, helping on the production and writing for a new starlet in the making, Carmen Batres. I'm working with writer, producer extraordinaire Daniel Avila to help further launch her career. If you have a moment enjoy a listen. Building And Rebuilding Foundations Weather starting out or looking to re-fleshout the basics to the advanced there seems to be always plenty to learn and relearn. In the United States there are three leading schools with major programs emphasizing contemporary, as in pop, music programs and one of them has developed an extensive online classroom as well and thus a worldwide reach. These schools are on the east coast, the west coast and right in the middle of the U.S. and provide an opportunity to attend full time programs or in many cases complete certificate programs with special emphasis in one area. We'll start on the east coast and work west. Berklee College of Music in Boston Berklee College of Music offers a major in songwriting that runs the gamut from development of skills in melody, harmony, and musical arrangement to creative musical composition, lyric writing, and incorporating your personal style into your writing. Your curriculum also would include study of the songs considered masterpieces in pop music history helping you to hone necessary skills for recognition of the quality elements in musical and lyrical structures. And you learn about co-writing by participating in many collaborative situations that are designed to give you a head start on the many situations you'd likely encounter in the professional and studio environment. Courses range from Lyric Writing: Writing from the Title to Songwriting Workshop: Writing Hit Songs to Commercial Songwriting Techniques. If you are also aspiring to become a singer in this process you'll compile a collection of original compositions at the same time that you're training in performance skills. The songs you write will encompass writing the lyrics and music, expressed in a lead sheet format, and demo recordings of each of your songs that are on par with the high caliber of recordings in today's commercial market. Short of attending the school directly Berklee offers a highly regarded and highly awarded online music school with programs ranging from a Master Certificate in Songwriting (12 courses) to a Professional Certificate (5 to 6 courses) to a Specialist Certificate (3 courses). All great ways to further your skill sets with no travel costs nor relocating involved. McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota For a more historical literary angle in songwriting to today's mainstream hip hop McNally Smith College of Music offers some unique approaches to both as well as songwriting for all of today's popular formats. For example in their Music Composition and Songwriting Program they have a course that blends the elements of poetry and songwriting in Songwriting and Performance Poetry. In this course, songwriting is integrated with the art of poetry and the art of music, with a stress on literature or the significance of the narrative. A collaboration is created with the verbal language composers and songwriters creating different types of music ensembles and students get regular public exposure of their works. McNally Smith has expanded its breadth of songwriting formats to include an elaborated program focus on hip hop leading to a Diploma in Hip Hop Studies. The college has a cross-departmental program in for hip-hop artists who would like to further their talents and skills - bath artistically and in the music business. The hip hop program covers the importance of the necessary skills for a successful career in the music industry and on the artistic side covers creating tracks, writing and performing lyrics, and mixing and recording your music in a studio - and all very hands-on, in-depth training. Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles Among the many contemporary music programs offered by the Musicians Institute's (MI) that is most directly related to popular songwriting would be their Independent Artist Program which provides the technical know-how and the professional skills needed to make it as a functioning independent recording and performing artist in the world of music today. The Independent Artist Program covers the complete creative process from songwriting, arranging, recording and production, to marketing, sales and promotion of your music. In this program you learn to record and mix live voices, musical instruments, loops and samples into completed tracks ultimately getting your compositions out to the world on your custom-made website. Upon completing this program you're fully ready to pursue and grow your career on your own. From Berklee to McNally Smith to MI - these schools offer great ways to build and expand foundations and are of course among many avenues of learning music and songwriting that all contribute to making us better at our craft and accordingly more satisfied. |
