Editor's Note:

New innovations in technology tend to make things better - at least eventually. However, when a new system is launched like Microsoft's new operating system Vista or Apple's recent move to the Intel based chip set it can cause numerous issues for software.

This month's issue touches on just such situations and notes where in reality some problems are already occurring and what to do about it.

While overall these new systems will likely improve things in the long run the point is to proceed cautiously if you're considering getting a new system or upgrading - or just simply waiting until the coast is clear.

Item 1

The New Mac The Knife? - Seeing Clearly With Vista?

I recently discussed an aspect of this whole idea on my blog but it bears repeating and elaborating as some, in the glow to get a new system with all its bells and whistles, may overlook the fact that a new Intel based Mac may not support all of your current software nor the new PC based Windows Vista system as well.

Problems Occurring With Mac Programs?

In particular, as it relates to Apple Macs, there have already been cases noted where Apple's new Intel based chip sets have caused software issues for programs, even in commonly used programs.

Problems are happening mainly as versions of the programs in question have not been created yet that can work in the new Apple environment.

For example, a commonly used plug-in is Atmosphere from Spectrasonic, and as of this writing it can not work on the new Macs and a fix is not slated until September, 2007 at the earliest.

If you want to get into the nitty gritty about the new Intel Macs and how it's affecting music software across the board click here to the Spectrasonic page that gets into the technical side and how it's affecting them and all Apple software producers.

What About Vista?

Vista continues its roll out and compatibility problems have been noted with its use.

One example of Vista causing issues with a commonly used program is the case with Ableton's Live program. The basic recommendation is not to switch to Vista and it may be some time before a switch is considered workable - for now users are advised to stay with XP.

For more on that and Vista issues with other software programs and even hardware click here to Create Digital Music for their spread on the issue.

Some Programs Already Adapted Though

In the case of the new Intel chipped Macs digital audio workstations (DAWs) like the commonly used Digital Performer and Logic have versions that work on them.

And a good example of Vista readiness is seen with FL Studio 7's "Fruity Loops", a popular loop program.

The point is is that if you're considering upgrading to a new Intel based Mac or moving to Vista with your PC, or getting a new Vista based PC, make sure your favorite programs and plug-ins will work - or at least learn about when and if they will.

Otherwise you may do well to not change anything yet until the issues have been addressed fully.
