RIGHT HAND TECHNIQUES

There is a wide range of approaches to guitar playing. Your uniqueness as a player will be greatly determined by your right hand style. The two most common techniques use:

  • Flat picks
  • Fingers only (to pick or strum)

Other styles not covered here include:

  • Fingerpicks
  • Hammering

Practicing right hand exercises will increase the control and speed of your playing.

FLAT PICKING

Hold the pick between your right thumb and indez finger with a firm grip. Only the tip of the pick should project between your fingers. Keep your wrist relaxed.

Practice strumming chords using both downstrokes and upstrokes. All the notes should sound clean; this can take a while to accomplish.

Next, practice targeted picking by hitting only individual strings. Once you are able to do this, you will gain invaluable control in your playing.

FINGERS ONLY

Classical guitarists use their fingers exclusively for picking and strumming, many Folk and Blues players do as well.
